I have been working on the crow series for many months. I believe that I have found my signature style of gestural drawing and color by revisiting where my style began to take shape in the late 1990s. I kept looking at the work as a whole in other words, I was being distracted by the entire piece of art, that is when I finally realized that I don’t work on a single piece of art but both the image and the background are two separate images that work together.
My approach is to look at the image in the work, for instance the crow, as a logo or an icon and work that image first. Then I work the background around the size and color of the crow so the background acts as a support frame for the image. I need to keep in mind that I draw or paint the image in an incomplete manner so the viewer can fill in the image based on his or her own experiences or observations.
